Dustin Johnson Makes History Completing WGC Grand Slam

Dustin Johnson Makes History Completing WGC Grand Slam

He cut the deficit with another birdie at 15, then rolled in his birdie bomb at 16 after recovering from a tee shot into the trees.

However, Rahm won the ninth, tenth, 13th, 15th and 16th holes to peg it back to 1UP - Johnson won the 12th - but pars for both players on the final two holes meant that the American clung on.

Rahm, who dispatched of Bill Haas in the semifinals, 3 and 2, wanted to face the hottest player in golf in the championship. Johnson typically plays in the event to get ready for the Masters next week. But his chip down the slope checked up and stayed short of the ridge, and he had to settle for par.

In the longest week of the year — seven matches over five days — and one of the toughest tournaments to win because match play is so unpredictable, Johnson delivered the outcome everyone expected Sunday at Austin Country Club. But as of right now I'm playing and I'm planning on going there.

"There's a lot of great players and I'm the first one to do it", Johnson said after completing the WGC Slam. Then, he had to make an 8-foot par putt to beat Tanihara and avoid extra holes and advance to the final.

"It's a long way to go". "I gave him 10 when I three-putted but that was about the only hole I gave him, he played tough".

A key moment looked to have arrived at the 11th, Johnson saving par and a half from 6ft as Rahm looked to impose himself further on the match.

He is projected to jump from 26th to 14th when the world rankings are updated on Monday.

In the afternoon finals match, Dustin defeated 22-year-old sensational Spaniard Jon Rahm one up on the last, eighteenth hole.

Johnson dominated the golf course and his competition during his seven rounds, never trailing in any match and working his way through three rounds of group play and two more matches in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals without even breaking a sweat.

Johnson remains in the form of his life, to the point where this week's Shell Houston Open might be a minor inconvenience; he would surely rather be heading straight to Augusta National. Luke Donald did it in 2001, but that was before round-robin play and so Donald played only six 18-hole matches that week.

South Korea's Mirim Lee stormed to a six-shot success in the Kia Classic in California. Johnson finished third at Houston previous year and has been sixth and fourth in his past two finishes at Augusta National, respectively, where he is expected to be a heavy favorite next week.

Darby, who started caddying on the Canadian Tour, now has two wins in opposite field tournaments.

Lee twice just missed putts that would have put her at 21-under.

At 13, Rahm drove the green and two-putted for a birdie that left him just 3 down again.

PGA - D.A. Points started with five straight birdies and closed with a 6-under-par 66 to win the Puerto Rico Open for his third PGA Tour title. The Spaniard picked up another hole on the par-4 10th, on which Johnson three-putted for another bogey.

Not even Tiger Woods can boast all of the four World Golf Championship titles in his crammed trophy cabinet.

That changed on Monday when Johnson informed Houston and PGA officials that he would take the week off before the Masters.
