Launch, Land, Launch - SpaceX Tries Reusing Its Rocket

Mind you, this isn't the first time a rocket will ever have been reused; the Space Shuttle solid rocket boosters -the two white rockets attached on either side to the orange external fuel tank- were commonly reused.

This attempt at reusability will mark a key moment for SpaceX in that basically all of its plans for the future - including human trips to Mars and maybe beyond - rely on fast, efficient and affordable launch capabilities.

Test fire was planned for today and Falcon-9 managed to pass through it without any problems. Rockets cost tens of millions of dollars, and in the past they've typically just been left to burn up in the atmosphere after launch. In this way, reusability was revealed to be the cornerstone of his objective.

Not only is SpaceX relaunching a Falcon 9 rocket that has previously been used on a mission, the company is going to try and land it back once again on a drone ship at sea. If this move turns out to be a success, it will greatly accelerate SpaceX's goal of cutting down the cost of space flights.

We don't know, since SpaceX and this particular customer, SES, are private companies. That first stage possess nine rocket engines, while the second stage has only one engine.

The Falcon 9 rocket was originally launched in April 2016. It charges companies roughly $US60 million ($79 million) to carry a payload, but in the case of this week's launch, SpaceX cut European-based telecom satellite operator SES a steep discount due to the refurbished rocket, according to a report by Spaceflight Now. Musk has acknowledged that refurbishment will need to be a quicker process and noted that the next Falcon 9 iteration Block 5 will be "the final upgrade of the Falcon architecture".

Relying on the Falcon 9's repurposed lower stage-including nine refurbished main engines meant to propel a European commercial satellite into Earth's orbit-the blastoff slated for Thursday from Florida's Kennedy Space Center will mark the culmination of years of intense planning, testing and public advocacy by the company. SpaceX is doing this on an orbital flight, with a paying customer.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket cost $54 million to build.

The SES satellite taking flight this week will enhance coverage for Latin America. That's because the Geo Stationary Transfer Orbit requires the first stage rocket to reach a significantly higher altitude than other low earth orbit missions. This was the second successful landing for the space flight privateers, and the first to touch down on one of their ocean landing platforms. On Thursday, winds and thick layer clouds ahead of the storm system are the concerns.

If the launch is delayed to the backup day Friday, the weather is forecast to worsen with a 60 percent chance of favorable conditions.

SpaceX has had eight successful Falcon 9 landings, and on Thursday we should see one of them make history.
