Come look at intel material, White House tells House panel

Mark Warner, D-Va., left, arrive for the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, March 30, 2017. La.

The White House has invited the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee to view materials related to incidental collection, he told reporters Thursday afternoon.

The Times reported that Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the senior director for intelligence at the NSC, and Michael Ellis, a White House lawyer who previously worked on the House intelligence committee, played a role in helping Nunes view the materials.

And Spicer last week suggested strongly that he doubted it was the White House that provided the information.

A Senate intelligence committee source said members view Nunes' claims as a "sideshow" and feel no urgency to run to the White House to view the documents. Nunes has resisted, defending his actions.

Nunes went to the White House grounds to look at the information without informing Schiff, then held a Must-See-TV news conference to say he'd gotten hold of some hot stuff, then went to the White House to inform President Trump of the details.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes says the investigation of possible Russian Federation ties to President Trump's campaign will "move forward" despite calls for him to recuse himself. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called for Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (WI) to replace Nunes as chair; Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), backed by Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), called for him to resign.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer says a letter was sent to lawmakers Thursday. The unholy duo of Republican Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain joined in, saying that if Nunes didn't brief other Committee members on who his sources on the Obama Administration's surveillance of President-elect Trump are, he should be removed.

The New York Times reported that two White House officials - including an intelligence aide whose job was recently saved by Trump - helped Rep. Devin Nunes view intelligence.

In his response, the Democrat said that the full committee should be able to see the materials.

A White House spokesperson declined to comment, explained NYT. He's become a controversial figure in intelligence circles, but Trump made a decision to keep him on over the objections of the CIA and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, according to the officials.

"We want to find out also if, in fact, these are the same as - or a subset of - the same materials earlier provided to the chairman, why that circuitous method, to use a diplomatic term, was employed to provide them to the committee", Schiff said. In the letter, the administration invited him and Nunes to review National Security Council documents relevant to the investigation.
