Udall to oppose Gorsuch for Supreme Court

Udall to oppose Gorsuch for Supreme Court

Two additional Democrats said Friday that they will vote against Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch and will support a filibuster against him.

Senate tradition demands respect for the president's nominations, so long as they are not unfit for the job and are within the ideological mainstream.

"He will have to earn 60 votes for confirmation".

"I have concluded that I can not support Neil Gorsuch's nomination", Schumer said on the Senate floor.

One conservative senator asserted that unless the Democrats voted overwhelmingly for Gorsuch the country will descend into further divisiveness. Joe Manchin of West Virginia has said he is open to voting for him. "But Judge Gorsuch didn't convince me that he would be an independent voice on the Court". He is not up for re-election next year and his state voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016. Schumer is going to force Gorsuch to get 60 votes or be replaced by a new nominee. The speakers included the father of an autistic boy whom Gorsuch ruled against. In response to Democratic criticism, he repeatedly said he has often ruled for the "little guy" over corporations.

"It's been the tradition in the United States Senate not to filibuster nominations for the Supreme Court", Fischer tells reporters during a conference call.

The Judiciary Committee was due to vote on the nomination on April 3.

Feinstein noted that Merrick Garland, Democratic former President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee who the Republican-led Senate past year refused to consider for confirmation, also earned the ABA's highest rating. Jameel Jaffer, former deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the Senate should not confirm Gorsuch without getting answers. The Republican push to dismantle Obama's Affordable Care Act and the controversy surrounding the investigation into contact between Trump associates and Russian Federation overshadowed the hearings.

Another witness was Jeff Perkins, father of an autistic son who Gorsuch ruled against in 2008 in a special-education dispute using legal reasoning repudiated by the Supreme Court in a related case on Wednesday.
