Attorney General Eric Schneiderman releases statemen on Trump University settlement

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman releases statemen on Trump University settlement

Schneiderman accused Trump of running a "bait-and-switch scheme" with the now defunct Trump University, misleading students into believing that Donald Trump himself was designing courses that would help them get rich in the real estate business.

Two class-action suits were launched in California in 2010 by former students who claimed they had been deceived by false marketing, and a suit was brought by NY state attorney general Eric Schneiderman in 2013.

"Trump University's victims waited years for compensation, while President Trump refused to settle and fought us every step of the way - until his stunning reversal last fall", he said.

The case dogged President Donald Trump during the campaign, only to be settled right after the election.

The settlement almost fell through after a Florida woman argued that she should be exempt from it and allowed to sue Trump on her own.

Almost 4,000 former students, who had submitted the claims and those who are eligible after this verdict, could get back about 90 percent of their money.

An attorney for that student could not immediately be reached for comment.

Settling the lawsuits means Trump can no longer be sued by any of the program's former students.

The judge strongly rejected a request by a Florida woman who argued that she should have been given more opportunity to opt out of the settlement. Sherri Simpson, a claimant from Ft. The controversy was further fueled by Trump accusing the judge of bias due to Curiel's Mexican heritage.

The lawsuits contend that Trump University gave nationwide seminars that were like infomercials, constantly pressuring people to spend more and, in the end, failing to deliver on its promises.

His final approval would bring closure to the trio of lawsuits, the first of which was filed in 2010.

Plaintiff attorney Jason Forge, center, speaks alongside attorney Rachel Jensen, left, after a hearing for a lawsuit against President Donald Trump Thursday, March 30, 2017, in San Diego.

A month later, he granted preliminary approval of the deal.

The case attracted a great deal of attention during the 2016 presidential campaign, with Trump's rivals for the Republican nomination as well as Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton using it against the billionaire businessman, who went on to win the November 8 election.
