Arsène Wenger pleased Guardiola views top-four finish like winning a trophy

Arsène Wenger pleased Guardiola views top-four finish like winning a trophy

Arsenal equalised through Theo Walcott towards the end of the first half, only for City to turn the gas back on and reinstate their lead two minutes later.

The result followed a sequence of four defeats in five Premier League games that had seen Wenger come under fire from a sizeable contingent of disgruntled Arsenal fans.

"I would say that overall, we started with quite a high level of anxiety and we were punished straight away", he explained.

"Overall it will help us to build confidence because the players certainly showed some mental strength and that will help us to come back to our natural fluency".

"In very hard moments our fans, at 1-0 down and 2-1 down, could have turned against us but I think they were absolutely sensational to get us through those hard moments".

Arsenal, will host West Ham on Wednesday in a Premier League clash, and are now sixth in the table, seven points from Manchester City in fourth.

He continued: "In very hard moments in the game I felt that our fans - at 1-0 down, at 2-1 down - could have turned against us". Arsenal requires a top-four finish in order to qualify for the Champions League next season.

"We are fighting to have a positive end of season".

The other game of the day was a classic relegation six pointer only for Swansea and Middlesbrough to play out a boring scoreless draw.

Wenger had to drive past a handful of fans who want him out of the club as he entered the Arsenal training ground on Tuesday morning - one of whom was wearing a Wenger mask and holding aloft a mock fourth-place trophy.

Arsenal shed Laurent Koscielny to injury at half-time as well as it was his main protective companion Shkodran Mustafi that increased over City's support from an edge to bring back parity after 53 mins.

"Monreal said he touched the ball with his hand", said Guardiola, who added: "He also said to me that England, in these kind of situations, there are no whistles".

"But we forgot a little bit to play".

"At this point of the season we know it is not good enough".

The Gunners have 51 points and are in sixth place, with two postponed games to go against Southampton and Sunderland.

"I wish just to dedicate my energy to football and the next game, and leave my own personal case out of the debate".
