Almost half of USA adults infected with genital HPV

Almost half of USA adults infected with genital HPV

"Other types are considered high risk, causing cancer in different areas of the body including the cervix and vagina in women, penis in men, and anus and oropharynx (mouth and throat) in both men and women".

There are 37 strains of the virus, 14 of which are considered high risk due to their ability to cause cancers of the genital area and throat.

Although HPV first came to the public's attention because of its link to cervical cancer, it is more prevalent in men than in women, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Anyone who is sexually active can get HPV, even if you have had sex with only one person.

The finding "is disturbing, and really needs to be noted so parents will get their young adolescents vaccinated before they become sexually active", McQuillan told Live Science.

About 4 percent of all adults had an oral infection with a cancer-causing strain of HPV.

The focus should not have been on sexually transmitted infections, some say.

"More than 80 percent of Americans will be infected with HPV in their lifetime, but in most cases, it never causes symptoms or illness - and certainly not cancer in most people", Einstein explains. In the United States, high-risk HPV among adults ages 18-59 was found at a staggering rate of 22.7 percent.

That percentage jumped to more than 42 percent during the two-year period if any type of genital HPV - the most common form of the virus - was included, the CDC found. HPV infections among women have been much more widely studied given the strong link between HPV and cervical cancer, a connection that has been known for decades.

The estimates for the strains that affect the throat are far lower, but still show men to be at greater risk: Among adults 18 to 69, 11.5 percent of men are infected, compared to 3.3 percent of women.

In 2013 and 2014, 45 percent of all men aged up to 60 had some sort of HPV strain and 25 percent had one of the strains that can cause cancer.

In recent years, health experts have reported the rise of HPV-related cases of oropharyngeal cancer, or cancers that occur in the tonsils and base of tongue. The CDC recommends the HPV vaccine for young women through the age of 26, and for young men through 21.

Almost half of American men and women under 60 are infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV), putting them at risk for certain cancers, federal health officials reported Thursday.

Positive results of the study would offer women the opportunity to protect themselves and their sexual partners against potentially deadly HPV infection through the simple application of an affordable, over-the-counter product.

The report was published today (April 6) by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics.
