Facebook will use its image recognition tech to fight revenge porn

Facebook will use its image recognition tech to fight revenge porn

Facebook has rolled out tools to help people thwart the trend of "revenge porn" or the circulation of their intimate images without consent on its platforms including Messenger and Instagram.

Facebook announced new ways to prevent revenge porn from being shared on the platform, Messenger and Instagram.

"We're focused on building a community that keeps people safe", Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post yesterday.

The figure Davis is referring to is that 93% of people affected by the sharing of non-consensual intimate images report "significant emotional distress" and 82% report significant difficulties in other aspects of their lives, according to the US Victims of Non-Consensual Intimate Images.

Any content reported will be reviewed by Facebook's community operations team and removed if it does not adhere to the social network's community standards. Facebook will now use "photo-matching technologies" to attempt to stop the spread of an image, by storing blurred (for anonymity) copies of removed images which will only be accessible by a small team of Facebook staffers, Reuters reports. And, they may disable the accounts of those who share the images "in many cases".

The world's biggest social network will soon begin doing more to battle a continued problem online: revenge porn.

The company recently told a German court that it can react to reports of misuse, but the sheer size of the Facebook user base makes it hard to be more proactive. It becomes hard for victims of non-consensual porn to remove images of themselves from the Internet, as it is easy to re-share photos that have been taken down in other places. Facebook also plans to partner with safety organizations to help offer support and resources to victims. Facebook will also continue to deactivate accounts that have been deemed to have violated the site policies. Facebook considers it any intimate photo that's shared without permission (potato, potahto).

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), who's looking to push legislation against the dissemination of revenge porn, praised Facebook's initiative. These users will be immediately alerted that the picture they are trying to share violates Facebook's policies. Facebook reps said that type of functionality isn't in the cards for now, and pointed us to an all-in-one guide Facebook developed with the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative and other companies to help victims with next steps.
