Sensex closes 47 points down after RBIs policy decision

The wider National Stock Exchange index Nifty dropped 21.55 points or 0.23 per cent to 9,243.60.

However, in pre-market opening, Sensex touched 29,996-mark and Nifty a new high of 9,264-level.

RBI kept its key lending rate unchanged at 6.25 per cent. RBI however increased the reverse repo rate - which it pays to banks for parking funds with it - by 0.25% to 6%, narrowing the policy rate corridor.

Titan Company soared 7.2 percent on expectations of robust March quarter earnings after the maker of watches and accessories said business was good across divisions in the second half of fiscal 2016-17 despite demonetization.

Among the BSE sectoral indices, Realty index closed with the biggest gain, up 2 per cent. Oil & Gas (up 0.7 per cent), Power (up 0.7 per cent) and Metal (up 0.4 per cent) indices were other notable gainers. "With no major surprises from RBI, markets stabilised, but will await the NPA resolution measures that are widely expected shortly".

A total of 895 shares ended with losses while 791 finished with gains while 64 ruled steady. At 9.15am, the home currency was trading at 65.06, down 0.27% from its Wednesday's close of 64.88.

In contrast, the BSE market breadth was marginally bullish - with 1,476 advances and 1,403 declines.

Turnover in the cash segment fell to Rs 25,422.94 crore to Rs 30,287.83 crore yesterday. Weak global cues also weighed.

Investors also looked ahead to some key events this week, including the release of minutes of the latest Federal Reserve meeting later today, the U.S.

Asian markets traded in the negative zone.

In the Asian region, Japan's Nikkei ended 1.40 per cent lower, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.52 per cent. Frankfurt's DAX 30 fell 0.41% while Paris CAC 40 was down 0.07% in their early deals.
