U.S. expects legal, open resolution of Ecuador election concerns

U.S. expects legal, open resolution of Ecuador election concerns

In a statement, the State Department also congratulated Lenin Moreno of the left-wing Alianza Pais party on his victory, which conservative challenger, Guellermo Lasso has said he will challenge.

But with 99.65% of ballots counted, the National Electoral Council's Pablo Pozo said these were the "irreversible official results". He also called his supporters to fill the streets to guard against fraud.

On election night, thousands of outraged Lasso supporters shouting "fraud" crashed through metal barricades to nearly reach the entrance of the electoral council's headquarters in Quito. "We expect they'll deny our requests but in doing so they'll be confirming the fraud".

The Organization of American States, which had an observer mission in Ecuador, said yesterday it had seen "no discrepancies" between results collected by its observers at polling stations and official results.

Still, Lasso has said he will challenge the results and some of his supporters were protesting by honking horns and waving yellow-blue-and red Ecuadorean flags in the Andean capital Quito on Tuesday.

The second round of Ecuador's presidential elections was held on Sunday.

Many voters had said they favoured change amid ongoing corruption allegations related to bribes that Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht paid to officials in Correa's government and a $12 million contracting scandal at state-run PetroEcuador.

Yet in the final weeks of the race, Moreno inched ahead in polls amid an aggressive campaign led by Correa to cast Lasso as a wealthy, out-of-touch politician who profited from the country's 1999 banking crisis.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange waded into Ecuador's contested presidential election, tweeting his congratulations to the ruling socialist party's candidate and telling his rival he should leave the country.

Conservative candidate Guillermo Lasso has claimed his campaign for the presidency of Ecuador found irregularities at almost 2,000 polling station tables where his opponent won in Sunday's election.

"I'm going to be the president of everyone but fundamentally those who are poorest", said Moreno.

Assange later apologized but blamed Lasso for starting the feud.

"I cordially invite Lasso to leave Ecuador within 30 days", Assange wrote, alluding to allegations the banker had stashed money overseas.
