McConnell reaches out to Romney about possible Senate bid

Mitt Romney is reportedly exploring a potential 2018 Senate bid in Utah, according to The Atlantic. But citing several sources familiar with his thinking, The Atlantic reports Romney is apparently mulling another run at the upper chamber - this time to replace longtime Sen.

Sen. Orrin Hatch has served in the Senate since 1977, and originally planned to step down after 2018, but after Republicans lost two seats in the Senate during the 2016 elections, he asserted he would most likely run again.

"If I could get a really outstanding person to run for my position, I might consider it", Hatch told the Journal.

Experts say there is no way Romney will run for the seat without Hatch's blessing.

'I've had some conversations w mitt Romney.

But he declined to handicap the GOP's chances of picking up Democratic-held seats in ten states President Trump carried previous year. And as the first LDS presidential nominee, he unsurprisingly carried Utah with 73 percent of the vote.

Many of the Mormon Romney-backers I spoke to talked about his call to public service in spiritual terms-with some even making half-joking references to "White Horse Prophecy", a bit of apocryphal LDS folk doctrine that predicts the U.S. Constitution will one day "hang by a thread" and Mormons will have to save it.

On Apr. 7, McConnell told reporters on Capitol Hill that he would not pressure Hatch in retiring but that he had discussed the the possibility with Romney. Hatch has also stated that he is "giving careful consideration" to running for re-election.

70-year-old Romney had no publicly commented on the speculation, but an anonymous close friend believes that the former governor would be eager to enter the political arena again.

"I don't think that's going to be a problem", he said.

Jowers said nationally, the GOP could be helped by Romney serving in the Senate.
