US general confident North Korean missile can be intercepted

North Korea's increasingly rebellious nuclear weapons programme is reported to be one of the main points of discussion during the meeting.

North Korea on Wednesday, test-fired a ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast, South Korea's military said.

Talks about North Korea are expected to feature high on the agenda of talks on Thursday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"That decision would be up to the president", he told reporters.

Two weeks ago, the South Korean and US militaries said they detected what they called a failed North Korean ballistic missile launch. There was a low rumble of discontent any time a South Korean player touched the ball.

The US military said on Tuesday that nuclear-armed North Korea had fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan but that it did not represent a threat to North America.

The weapons display could be a low-key way for North Korea to show the world it is ready for war, without launching new projectiles, officials in Seoul said, according to local television network MBC.

In response, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson only offered a 23-word statement: "North Korea launched yet another intermediate range ballistic missile". The North has defied the ban, saying it infringes on its sovereign rights to self-defence and the pursuit of space exploration.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry called the North's latest missile launch a "reckless provocation" that posed a threat to global peace, while Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said his country lodged a strong protest over the launch. The launch was timed for the forthcoming visit of China's leader to the United States.

Multiple top-ranking military and intelligence officials told the news source that another option presented to Trump by the National Security Council is an operation to kill the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

"China has great influence over North Korea", the president told the Financial Times Sunday.

Drawing a contrast with the USA position, she said, "To fundamentally resolve a deep-seated issue as such, we should adopt a holistic approach that can address both the symptoms and the root cause and accommodate all parties' legitimate concerns in a balanced way".

The first test of the year was an intermediate-range KN-15 on February 12 that reached an altitude of 550 kilometers and flew 500 kilometers before crashing into the East Sea.

Following North Korea's test of four missiles last month, Trump affirmed Washington's "ironclad commitment" to Japan and South Korea.
