USA comment terse on latest North Korea missile

"North Korea fired an unidentified projectile into the Sea of Japan this morning from (the eastern port of) Sinpo", the ministry said in a statement. Initial assessments indicate it was a KN-15 medium-range ballistic missile, the statement said.

Wednesday's test represents a recent shift for the North Korean military from simple first-generation liquid fueled missiles to more advanced medium range ballistic missiles using solid fuel that is more hard to detect prior to launch, said Jeffrey Lewis, the director of the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in California.

While Tillerson's statement was unusually short and vague, experts in South Korea and Japan saw it as a sign of consistency on how the United States under President Donald Trump will deal with North Korea as it speeds up its nuclear weapon and missile developments.

Pyongyang is on a quest to develop a long-range missile capable of hitting the United States mainland with a nuclear warhead, and has so far staged five nuclear tests, two of them past year.

This latest provocation came a day following the U.S. announcement that it is planning to redeploy tactical nuclear weapon systems to South Korea as a deterrent against the increasing missile and nuclear threats posed by the rogue regime. The Japanese government said it had lodged a strong protest against North Korea following the launch.

Last August Pyongyang also successfully test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile 500 kilometres towards Japan, far exceeding any previous sub-launched tests, in what the North s leader Kim Jong-Un hailed as the "greatest success". The testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles only further highlights the need for the State Department to declare the obvious - North Korea is a state-sponsor of terrorism.

"As adversaries continue to pursue credible and advanced capabilities, we too must evolve our missile defense capabilities to outpace increasingly complex threats", she said.

"If we push the button, the bombs will be fired and reduce the U.S.to ashes", an editorial in the ruling Workers' Party newspaper the Rodong Sinmun said on Wednesday. North Korea could also have used its latest missile launch to show that it won't back down to pressures by the Trump administration.

"Yes, we will talk about North Korea", Trump told the Financial Times over the weekend.

The Massachusetts Democrat's plan, outlined in a letter that was sent to Trump on the eve of his first meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, suggests that the U.S. should agree to direct talks with North Korea in exchange for China's commitment to drastically escalate sanctions against Pyongyang if they fail to negotiate in good faith.

Earlier this week, Mr Trump vowed to "solve" the problem of North Korea with or without Chinese help.

South Korea s defence ministry said the missile had flown some 60 kilometres (about 40 miles).

The February launch occurred as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida over the weekend.

A few hours south of Pyongyang the military of the nuclear-armed regime faces off against US-led United Nations forces across the Demilitarized Zone, regarded as one of the most heavily fortified locations on Earth.

South Korea says North Korea has fired a ballistic missile into the waters off its east coast. Ignoring numerous condemnations and sanctions from the worldwide community, North Korea has continued to test its missile capabilities and its nuclear devices.
