Davis Cup: US wins doubles to stay alive in quarterfinal

Davis Cup: US wins doubles to stay alive in quarterfinal

Thompson, ranked 79th in the world, held his nerve to see off a faltering Sock 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 in front of a raucous crowd on Pat Rafter Arena at the Queensland Tennis Centre.

In the second fixture of Australia's quarter-final tie with the US, Kyrgios was able to pull past his world no.23 opponent in a tight contest and in turn put his country 2-0 up after Jordan Thompson had earlier secured an upset win over Jack Sock.

Jordan Thompson will face John Isner, who was in excellent form despite losing to Kyrgios on Saturday over three tense sets.

USA captain Jim Courier originally nominated Sam Querrey as one of his doubles players but had telegraphed the possibility of a late change, which he made by summoning Sock - the top-ranked player in the tie at No.15 in the world - an hour before play.

"Try and wear him down, I think I'm fit enough to do that".

The 22-year-old won both of his matches against the Czech Republic in February's first-round tie in Melbourne.

Sock and Johnson battled from a set down to claim the second set and then claimed a 4-0 lead in set three. Thompson clinched the match in the fourth set by breaking Sock's service twice.

Hewitt was delighted by the performances of his two singles stars, but wasn't ready to start thinking of a potential semi-final against either 2015 finalists Belgium or Italy.

Australia will be out for revenge in this Davis Cup matchup, after being knocked out of the tournament by the Unites States past year.

AMERICAN Jack Sock has redeemed himself to take the Davis Cup quarter-final against Australia into a deciding day after making good in his late substitution into the doubles. Sam Groth and John Peers are scheduled to play the American pair of Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson.

Hewitt said it was no surprise Sock - the highest-ranked player in the tie - was subbed into the doubles after United States captain Jim Courier had telegraphed the possibility of a late change.

"(I tried to) play within myself, not try to hit it too big, because that is not really my style".

"I'm sure he'd much rather play in a dead rubber tomorrow, but the way he played yesterday he's going to have a lot of confidence out there", Hewitt said. That liability has turned into an enormous advantage, because all four US players (John Isner, Sock, Querrey an Johnson) are accomplished in singles as well as doubles.
