Fewer hurricanes for 2017, but three could be 'major'

Fewer hurricanes for 2017, but three could be 'major'

Also predicting a below-normal season are AccuWeather meteorologists, who are looking at a potential 10 named storms, with five becoming hurricanes and three of those becoming major. The average is twelve.

Colorado State meteorologist Phil Klotzbach said that of the four predicted hurricanes, two should be major hurricanes - category 3, 4 or 5 - with sustained wind speeds of 111 miles per hour or greater.

Thanks to the possibility of an oncoming weak El Nino, and cooler than normal Atlantic sea surface temperatures, the forecast this year is expected to be near or slightly below average.

El Nino creates stronger westerly winds that can work to shred hurricanes in the Atlantic during storm season.

The first group of weather prognosticators issued predictions for the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season, which runs from June 1-Nov.

"Everyone should realize that it is impossible to precisely predict this season's hurricane activity in early April", the CSU report says.

That is common when El Niño is present because some of the climate conditions for which it is known tend to discourage tropical cyclones from forming and strengthening. Out of those, his department forecasts 4 will become hurricanes, compared to the typical 6 to 7 in any given season.

Numbers in ( ) represent medians based on 1981-2010 data. The average for the past century is 31 percent. Just like in Russian Roulette, the more tropical systems forming in the ocean, it's agreed that higher chances will exist for a strike. It only takes one storm to hit the coast to make an "inactive" season an "active" season for the ones affected.

As we said before, it only takes one storm to do massive damage, even in a "below-average" season. The chances of a hurricane striking the entire coastline -from ME to the U.S. In early October, Hurricane Matthew dumped almost a foot of rain on coastal Georgia communities. The "official" National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast is released in late May.
