Tillerson: 'There is no change' to US stance on Syria

Johnson was to visit Moscow on Monday, a main ally of the Syrian regime headed by President Bashar al-Assad.

"This strike was related exclusively to the most recent horrific use of chemical weapons against women, children, and as the President said, even small babies", Tillerson said on ABC's "This Week".

"Assad now knows there is a red line with regard to the use of chemical weapons".

Sadr said the USA strikes would "drag the region to war" and could help "the expansion of Daesh", the militant Islamic State group, which controls parts of Iraq and Syria.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has cancelled a trip to Russian Federation over its support for Assad, prompting Moscow's foreign ministry to say London has "no real influence".

Mr Johnson spoke with USA secretary of state Rex Tillerson, who is still due to visit Russian Federation, before making his decision.

Referring to Russia, Sir Michael wrote: "This latest war crime happened on their watch".

"GOP presidential front-runner and billionaire entrepreneur Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled his plan to 'make the military great again, ' saying he intends to reinstate the draft as part of a larger effort to bolster America's armed forces".

The precautionary move, revealed in statistics made public by the command on Saturday, was taken as Russian officials have threatened to suspend the communication line the USA and Russian militaries use to notify each other about air operations in Syria.

Some US and other Western counterterrorism officials have said the missile strike could, nonetheless make the fight against the IS in Syria more hard.

By contrast, last Tuesday the US-led command carried out twice as many strikes in Syria against the IS, and against a broader array of targets.

Russian Federation has consistently denied that Syrian forces used chemical weapons, insisting the incident at Khan Sheikhoun was caused by a hit on a rebel chemical weapons plant, a claim dismissed by the West.

The Obama administration provided limited support for anti-Assad rebels, but never directly struck government targets after Obama called off such strikes four years ago, at a time when Trump also said attacking Assad would be a mistake. And the promise of further attacks if chemical weapons are used again is plainly an escalation beyond a one-off "message" strike.

"According to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, he has said that the United States is playing terrorism game in Syria".

The Syrian opposition, which long accused the Obama administration of inaction, wants the US attack to be the start of a more aggressive policy toward Assad.

"We will continue to talk with them about how this undermines any hope of improving relations, not just with the United States, but it's - it's pretty evident that they are taking similar tactics into electoral processes throughout Europe and so they're really undermining any hope for improved relations with many European countries as well", he said.
