Venezuela protesters target Maduro, vow to keep up pressure

Venezuela protesters target Maduro, vow to keep up pressure

In some demonstrations government groups have roughed up several opposition leaders and fired rubber bullets and a previously unseen reddish gas at crowds.

The government has come under increased pressure from American and European countries that have condemned violence in Venezuela and the ban on Capriles.

On Monday, several patients including a newborn baby had to be evacuated from a medical clinic in the Las Mercedes district after it was struck by tear gas canisters, a doctor there, Luis Montanes, told reporters. He said 134 people remain detained, eight of whom he said are considered political prisoners.

The protests intensified on Saturday after the government on Friday barred opposition leader Henrique Capriles from holding political office for 15 years over "administrative irregularities" during his current term as the governor of the northern state of Miranda.

President Maduro - a former bus driver and union leader who accuses foreign countries of "meddling" - is now visiting communist ally Cuba for a meeting of the ALBA bloc, which includes Venezuela's leftist allies in Latin America including Nicaragua, Bolivia and Cuba.

Venezuela's Supreme Court decided in late March to take over the functions of the opposition-led Congress before an outcry forced it to retreat.

Venezuela has struggled with triple-digit inflation, food and medical supply shortages amid an ongoing economic slump.

On Sunday the president called on the opposition to return to stymied efforts at dialogue and said he was eager for regional elections to take place.

The protesters were seen carrying Venezuelan flags and anti-Maduro signs as they hurled rocks and sticks at police.

Sucre added. The incident drew immediate parallels with previous year, when authorities briefly rounded up more than 30 people on Margarita island for heckling Maduro, a rare sight given that the president's appearances typically are carefully choreographed and show only cheering supporters wearing red shirts.

"A nation without a parliament is like a body without a soul", the bishops said in a public statement from the episcopal conference, adding that the decision by the supreme court was "morally unacceptable".

His death comes on the heels of the killing of 19-year-old Jairo Ortiz on the outskirts of Caracas on Thursday in the area of an opposition protest.

Maduro was in Havana for a meeting of foreign ministers of the leftist ALBA bloc, a Latin American group co-founded by his late mentor, Hugo Chavez.

Officials also used the protest to garner support in rejecting the opposition's continued call for protest.
