CIA director blasts Wikileaks as 'non-state hostile intelligence'

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has slammed the Central Intelligence Agency for withholding the information about the vulnerabilities and preventing the tech industry and government officials from taking the necessary steps.

The site publishing hacked emails from Clinton's campaign chairman and the Democratic National Committee that resulted in various scandals. "We are an organization that has a commitment to the public to publish true information and not suppress it, and to make sure that as many people read it as possible", he said in an interview with Democracy Now on April 12. "When Snowden absconded to the comfortable clutches of Russian intelligence, his treachery directly harmed a wide range of United States intelligence and military operations", Pompeo noted.

Pompeo went as far as to lambast WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as a "darling" of terrorist groups, saying a member of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) recently thanked Assange on social media for "providing a means to fight America in a way that AQAP had not previously envisioned".

Speaking at a Center for Strategic and International Studies event on Thursday, Pompeo condemned those who leaked classified information under the guise of altruism and whistleblowing, while acknowledging that there was more for agencies like the CIA to do to prevent leaks. Snowden now lives in Russian Federation. He has been living under asylum at Ecuador's embassy in London since 2012. He received political asylum after skipping bail to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted over a rape allegation.

And Pompeo's attacks on WikiLeaks sit uncomfortably for him, too: Last summer, as Assange published fresh disclosures from hacked emails of the DNC, Pompeo gleefully tweeted them out. "True whistleblowers use the well-established and discreet processes in place to voice grievances; they do not put American lives at risk".

Our most recent disclosures describe the CIA's multibillion-dollar cyberwarfare program, in which the agency created unsafe cyberweapons, targeted private companies' consumer products and then lost control of its cyber-arsenal. Since the disclosure, the USA government has all but publicly accepted the embarrassing claim.

During a rally in October in Pennsylvania, Trump said "I love Wikileaks!" while the crowd chanted, "Lock her up!" "Spying tools and operational protocols detailed in the recent Vault 7 leak have been used in cyberattacks against at least 40 targets in 16 different countries by a group Symantec calls Longhorn", Symantec wrote on its official blog Monday.

"A number of specific rules keep us centred on that mission and protect the privacy of our fellow Americans". The response, in a word, is heartening. Our role as an independent, fact-based news organization has never been clearer.

We're thankful for your support in every way.
