Mobile, Dish, Comcast bolster their airwave holdings at FCC auction

The company also claims that the low-band spectrum it bought should be clear of the congestion that can be found on spectrum that's bought and used by the networks of AT&T and Verizon Wireless. "Congratulations to the FCC!" said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. There are still plenty of spaces where T-Mobile doesn't have great coverage, but once they get their 600MHz spectrum rolled out, there will be even less.

Interested parties were celebrating the FCC's release of a raft of data on who won what in the recent broadcast incentive auction, as well as next steps and timelines for repacking TV stations after the auction.

T-Mobile is quick to point out that the spectrum they purchased covers 100% of the United States and Puerto Rico, with a nationwide average of 31 MHz of spectrum acquired.

T-Mobile stock edged up 0.5% to 64.23 in the stock market today.

The carrier is spending nearly $8 billion to acquire more than 1,500 wireless licenses that span across the United States.

The company managed to acquire an equivalent of one million square miles of 600 MHz spectrum, which is basically more space for mobile airwaves to travel.

"These auction results are a win for everyone, especially consumers, and generated BILLIONS [emphasis his] for broadcasters and US taxpayers", he said.

Low-band frequencies, like this 600Mhz spectrum and the 700Mhz spectrum that was auctioned off in 2008, are considered the "beachfront" property of LTE, since it carriers high-speed signals further distances, with better penetration of thick walls and basements than mid-high frequencies, which is where T-Mobile now deploys the fast majority of its LTE network. With this purchase, T-Mobile now has significantly more low-band spectrum per customer than any other major provider and almost TRIPLE the low-band spectrum per customer than Verizon.

Almost a year after it began, the major auction in the US has been concluded: T-Mobile US was able to secure important spectrum in the two-stage procedure. It expects to begin putting "some" of it to use as early as this year; its subsidiary MetroPCS will also be able to make use of the new spectrum.

"With regards to unlicensed spectrum, we're pleased with the amount of unlicensed spectrum made available at this clearing level".

Comcast was the third biggest spender in the auction, though it came in at a distant third. "While we celebrate reaching the official close of the auction, there is still much work ahead of us". "We think the rationale was to build a complete spectrum portfolio, with significant holdings in both mid and low frequency bands".
