Italy's Emma Morano, the world's oldest person, dies at 117

A woman believed to the the oldest human being on Earth and the last surviving person born in the 19th century has passed away at 117 years old.

Born on November 29, 1899, Morano's life spanned three centuries.

While she had been spending more time sleeping and less time speaking in recent weeks, she had still eaten her daily raw egg and biscuits that day, he said.

"Today she has slowed down a bit, reducing the number to two some days because she says three can be too much", her doctor, Carlo Bava, said previous year.

Dr. Carlo Bava told the AP that she died while sitting in a rocking chair in her home, located in the Northern Italy town of Verbania.

Bava said he last paid his nearly-daily call on Morano on Friday.

"I worked in a factory until I was 65, then that was that", she said as she sat in an armchair by her window, a white shawl over her shoulders.

Last May, that was Emma Morano's response to learning that the Guinness World Record for Oldest Living Person had been passed on to her following the death of the previous record-holder, Susannah Mushatt Jones.

"I eat two eggs a day, and that's it".

"'Either you agree to marry me or I will kill you'", Ms Morano said, recalling his proposal. 'She was always very decisive'. That husband reportedly beat her, but she was able to escape the relationship 12 years later.

She also adhered to a unique diet of two raw eggs and one cooked egg per day and had good genes: The eldest of eight children, Morano had a sister live to 102 and another to almost 100.

She spent most of her life without a partner after leaving her violent husband in 1938. She separated from Martinuzzi the next year, but never divorced him.

The title of oldest living person in the world now goes to Violet Brown of Jamaica, aged 117, born on March 10, 1900.

"I didn't want to be dominated by anyone", she told The New York Times.
