Will he or won't he? Nurkic's return still uncertain

Will he or won't he? Nurkic's return still uncertain

Phil Jackson has finally publicly admitted what we've all suspected for months, if not years: he wants the New York Knicks to get rid of Carmelo Anthony.

NY went 31-51, falling well short of expectations with its third consecutive 50-loss season.

He'll also be in L.A., but he also took the time out to say he really he enjoyed playing here even with the losses, which of course surprises us because he's been on some very successful teams.

According to ESPN's Ian Begley, Anthony prefers to remain in NY, but wants a commitment from management to winning immediately. They made the playoffs each of his first three years with the team, including a 54-win season in 2012-13.

The Knicks have little leverage, and Anthony - who shouldn't feel any obligation to appease Jackson - can sabotage negotiations because of the no-trade clause.

Per Mike Vorkunov of the New York Times, Jackson said he has "never criticized Carmelo".

The best compliment he could muster for Anthony was, "He held it together pretty well with all the drama".

Porzingis, according to team sources, is frustrated with the Knicks' lack of direction.

More news: Spring sunshine could give way to wintry washout for Easter weekend

Phil Jackson demonstrated during Friday's press conference that he is-how can I put this mildly-a big, stupid baby.

Moving Anthony will be hard, given his age and the $54 million remaining on the five-year deal Jackson gave him in 2014.

Porzingis later liked Anthony's post on Instagram.

While Jackson's comments about the possibility of a trade were his most candid yet, he still seems to be tiptoeing around the situation.

"I think there's disconnect sometimes with this team and I think there was some rebelliousness with this team that created some of the discord during the year", Jackson said.

"I have a lot of thinking and reflecting to do", Anthony told ESPN. "You don't want to end up your career not winning", Jackson said.

Perhaps no two issues demonstrate that contradictory nature than Phil's opinions on Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Rose. He'd cryptically criticized Anthony in a February tweet and on TV, and there was the Seasoned Basketball Scribe version of "Ether" penned by longtime Jackson pal Charley Rosen, but now Jackson's opinion is on the record. If Anthony doesn't want to stay at the Knicks, a place where he isn't wanted, he may have to go to a team that won't be fighting immediately for a championship.
