Massive US bomb death toll rises to 94

For four weeks prior to the bombing, Afghan special forces tried to penetrate the area, but they were unsuccessful due to the hard terrain and a belt of improvised explosive devises planted by ISIS fighters, Gen. Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for Afghanistan's Defense Ministry said.

Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the Nangarhar government, said an intense clean-up operation has begun in Achin following this attack.

President Ashraf Ghani threw his support behind the bombardment, saying it was "designed to support the efforts of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) and USA forces conducting clearance operations in the region".

However, ISIS denied that any of its fighters were killed or injured, according to a statement in Arabic distributed by the terror group's media wing, Amaq News Agency.

On Friday, the top US commander in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, defended the strike, saying the decision to use the bomb was based on military needs, not political reasons.

The airstrike has resulted into the elimination of the strategic hideout of the terrorist group in Nangarhar, Gen. Muad said, adding that the civilians did not suffer any casualties.

The Pentagon said the target was a series of caves and bunkers used by ISIL, which stands for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and is also known as ISIS.

Shinwari said no civilian casualties were inflicted as civilians living in the area of the bombing had been evacuated by the Afghan military.

"I was sleeping when we heard a loud explosion. It was an earsplitting blast", said Shah Wali, 46, who lives nine miles from the border. He said he could see smoke in the sky.

Another Achin resident, Mohammad Hakim, approved of the strike.

"It was a strong position and four times we had operations [attacking the site] and it was not possible to advance", he said, adding the road leading to the cave complex "was full of mines".

"They killed our women, youths and elders sitting them on mines".

O'Neill also pointed out that the military used to send troops into the cave and tunnel system, which was extremely risky. It is indeed a reflection of the fear that war tired ISIS fighters are seeking sanctuaries and attack bases in Afghanistan with United States and Russian forces playing active roles in Syria and Iraq. The Kabul government immediately hailed the move and pronounced it useful in ensuring success for the Afghan and the US forces eliminating the IS militants.

Trump called Thursday's operation a "very, very successful mission".

He was using an Arabic term that refers to Islamic State, which has established a small stronghold in eastern Afghanistan and launched deadly attacks on the capital, Kabul.

The district governor of Achin, Ismail Shinwari, said security forces had recovered 92 bodies, none of them civilians.

The statement could not be independently verified, and on Friday Afghan and foreign troops in the vicinity were not allowing reporters or locals to approach the scene of the attack.
