Pence warns NKorea 'era of strategic patience is over'

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, left, is briefed by U.S. Gen. Vincent Brooks, right, commander of the United Nations Command, U.S. Forces Korea and Combined Forces Command from Observation Post Ouellette in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), near the border village of Panmunjom, South Korea, Monday, April 17, 2017.

"It's time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully", he said on ABC's "This Week" programme.

"The president has made clear that he will not accept the United States and its allies and partners in the region being under threat from this hostile regime with nuclear weapons", McMaster continued.

On Sunday, US and South Korean military officials reported that Pyongyang's latest missile test had failed earlier in the day, with the projectile exploding nearly immediately after the launch.

Pence, whose father served in the 1950-53 Korean War, said the United States would stand by its "iron-clad alliance" with South Korea and was seeking peace through strength.

Pence is on an Asia-Pacific tour that will include visits to Japan, Indonesia and Australia.

A White House foreign policy adviser traveling with Pence said no USA response to the missile launch was expected because there was no need for the U.S.to reinforce the failure.

Mr Pence reiterated "all options are on the table" to deal with the threat posed by Pyongyang and that any use of nuclear weapons by the reclusive regime would met with an "overwhelming and effective response".

Pointing to the quarter-century since the United States first confronted North Korea over its attempts to build nuclear weapons, he said a period of patience had followed.

Trump's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, indicated on Sunday that Trump was not considering military action against North Korea for now, even as a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier strike group was heading for the region.

On Thursday, the US military said it had dropped "the mother of all bombs", the largest non-nuclear device it has ever unleashed in combat, on a network of caves and tunnels used by Islamic State in Afghanistan. North Korea has indicated that it plans to conduct another nuclear test, and that may not be far off as satellite images show that preparations are already complete.

"[President Donald Trump] and his military team are aware of North Korea's most recent unsuccessful missile launch". It failed, exploding about five seconds after it left the ground.

"We need to apply pressure on North Korea so they seriously respond to a dialogue" with the worldwide community, he said, urging China and Russian Federation to play more constructive roles on the issue.

"Why would I call China a currency manipulator when they are working with us on the North Korean problem?"

But less than two weeks later, Pence's comments make clear that these bombings served a different goal: as warnings for North Korea. After arriving in the South Korean capital, he placed a wreath at Seoul National Cemetery and then worshipped with military personnel at an Easter church service at the U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan. On Sunday, North Korea launched what the US believes was a medium-range ballistic missile from its submarine base.

South Korea reported that this year's Key Resolve and Foal Eagle drills included exercises focused on "incapacitating North Korean leadership".
