Russian relations 'may be at an all-time low'

"The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship".

The meeting is further evidence of a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries since Donald Trump became president.

US President Donald Trump described the relationship between the two countries as at an "all-time low".

Russian Federation says the chemicals that killed civilians last week belonged to rebel forces, not Assad's government, and accused the United States of acting on a false pretext. All this seemed to indicate that Mr Trump saw Mr Putin as a potential partner, even ally.

Boris Johnson insisted on Wednesday night that he had not given up on a political solution to the Syrian civil war despite "dismay" at Russian Federation vetoing a UN Security Council resolution condemning last week's nerve gas attack. The Foreign Secretary said Russian Federation had put itself on "the wrong side of the argument" but it was not too late for Vladimir Putin to change his mind over his support for Bashar al-Assad's "barbaric" regime, writes The Telegraph. Two days later America fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the airbase in central Syria from which it claimed Mr Assad's attack had been launched.

But in an apparent reversal, Mr Trump said the alliance is a "bulwark of global peace and security". He added there was no talk Wednesday about a possible Trump-Putin meeting. Since its first deployment of air power in Syria in 2015, Russian Federation has kept Mr Assad in power and helped him recover territory. U.S. -Russia relations were supposed to improve under the Trump administration.

Not only did Lavrov categorically dispute this interpretation of events, saying Russian Federation was "not convinced" by the US' evidence that sarin gas was deliberately used, but called for an "honest investigation" into the attack that he suggested would reveal the USA and United Nations were bluffing if it did not come to pass. "I think he had a very successful meeting in Russia", Trump said. Firstly, President Putin had a very important talk with Secretary of State Tillerson for about two hours. In response Mr Lavrov gave his counterpart a long lecture on American efforts to achieve "regime change" around the world, citing Serbia, Libya and Iraq.

Looking at the resolution's supporters sitting around the horseshoe-shaped table in the Security Council, he said: "You are afraid of an impartial investigation" that the Syrian government was being blamed for chemical weapons attacks carried out by extremists.

While the United States has put responsibility for the attack that killed more than 80 people squarely with Assad, Russia believes it was the work of terrorists, with Putin claiming more chemical attacks are on the way in Syria created to frame the Assad regime.

The U.N. Security Council has scheduled a vote Wednesday afternoon on a Western-drafted resolution that would condemn the reported use of chemical weapons in northern Syria and demand that all parties provide speedy access for investigators.
