Women's leaders start to thin at Boston Marathon

Kiplagat, a 37-year-old mother of two from Kenya, won in an unofficial time of 2:21:52, with Rose Chelimo of Bahrain second in 2:22:51 and Jordan Hasay of the US third in 2:23:00.

Kathrine Switzer became a pivotal figure in the women's movement in 1967, when, registered as "K. V. Switzer", she ran the annual Boston Marathon during an era when it was a men-only event.

Now, after running 39 marathons, 70-year-old Switzer will run in this year's Boston Marathon, likely with more people cheering her on than in 1967.

Hug outpushed 10-time victor Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa down Boylston Street to finish in an unofficial time of 1 hour, 18 minutes, 4 seconds.

As one American Boston Marathon victor runs off into the sunset this year, the next great American shone in his debut, finishing second in his first Boston run.

Olympian Desi Linden surged to finish fourth overall in 2:25:06.

Meb Keflezighi, who in 2014 became the first American to win the Boston Marathon in over three decades, finished 13th in his final appearance at the race.

In the men's competition, American Galen Rupp, a bronze medalist in the Rio Olympics, took second with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 58 seconds.

The first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon is back this year, 50 years later.

The couple ran the race together, Russell finished with a time of 04:19:14 and McAdams following one second after.

"It obviously meant so much to them to have this sense of fearlessness", Switzer said of what her bib number represents.

In the women's race, Kiplagat conjured a similarly decisive burst over the closing stages to claim the race for the first time.

The warm temperatures that hit 79 degrees at the 20-kilometer mark in slowed the runners but the strong tailwind was a boost - especially for the wheelchair races.

Quigley was the seventh fastest American and fastest MA resident in the race.

Keflezighi headed over to shake the hand of the father of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old who was killed in the 2013 bombings. She wanted to run the Boston Marathon herself, but when she told her coach the idea was immediately shot down - unless she could prove herself.

After the incident afforded her celebrity status, she joined Avon Inc.as an executive and helped create the Avon International Running Circuit of women-only races in 27 countries.
