Facebook video killing suspect shoots himself dead after cops chase him

Facebook video killing suspect shoots himself dead after cops chase him

"After a brief pursuit, Stephens shot and killed himself", Pennsylvania State Police said on Twitter.

State police say Steve Stephens was spotted Tuesday morning by state police in Erie County, in the state's northwest corner. Stephens led police on a short pursuit before stopping.

"This is not something that should have been shared around the world", Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said of the viral Facebook video.

For the first time since police say her former boyfriend, Steve Stephens, murdered an elderly man and then posted the video on Facebook, Joy Lane spoke to Cleveland's WJW on Tuesday. According to CNN, the video remained on his page for two hours before being taken down by the social-media site's administrators.

PBS NewsHour will update this story as it develops. "We were just trying to make sure she could get in contact with state police", restaurant owner Tom Ducharme said.

Son Robby Miller said posting the horrific murder on Facebook stripped his father of his dignity.

He conceded that Facebook has "a lot of work" to do and "we will keep doing all we can to prevent tragedies like this".

Police said Steve Stephens, 37, murdered a man on East 93rd Street in Cleveland Sunday afternoon.

Stephens's mother told local news channel that she called him on Sunday after learning about the video, and he had told her he was shooting people because he was "mad with his girlfriend".

The shooting video was visible on Facebook for almost two hours before it was reported, the company said.

The killing triggered soul-searching at Facebook, which once again found its live video product used to broadcast a violent crime.

"We are in the early stages of this", Williams said.

"She's the reason why all of this is about to happen to you", the shooter said to Godwin.

When police tracked down Stephens' auto, they pursued him while trying to get him to pull over.
