NCAA returns events to NC after state rolls back LGBT law

NCAA returns events to NC after state rolls back LGBT law

The NCAA statement said a majority of the board "reluctantly voted" to allow for consideration of bids from North Carolina during current deliberations for sites running through 2022.

As of Tuesday morning, the state of North Carolina has sent in bids for 133 championship events over the five year period. The state passed a compromise bill to roll back elements of the law in March, and the league announced a day later it would return to North Carolina in 2017-18. "We are thrilled to renew our relationships with so many terrific people, outstanding cities and first-class venues".

The NCAA pulled championships from North Carolina a year ago in response the HB2, the so-called "bathroom bill".

On Tuesday, the NCAA released its future tournament sites and, in addition to the previously announced first- and second-round games in Charlotte in 2018, Greensboro (2020) and Raleigh (2021) are scheduled to host opening weekend games.

North Carolina venues became eligible again after Republican legislators and Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, facing a reported NCAA-imposed deadline, negotiated a compromise to replace HB2. The Dr Pepper ACC Championship Football Game has been a sellout in three of the six years it has been played in Charlotte.

Visit Winston-Salem projected the indoor track championship will account for 1,000 hotel room nights and an economic impact of more than $770,000 for the March 12-13, 2021, event.

WakeMed Soccer Park will host the Division I women's soccer tournament, the College Cup, in 2018 and 2020.

The NCAA did not provide any specific North Carolina venue or House Bill 2 comments in its statement.

The 2018 ACC Women's Swimming & Diving and Men's Diving Championships will be held February 14-17 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, while the ACC Men's Swimming Championship is set for February 21-24.

The Greensboro Aquatic Center will host both men's and women's swimming and diving championships for the conference in February 2018.

The NCAA awarded first and second round games to Greensboro in 2020 and the same two rounds to Raleigh in 2021. Most notably, a men's basketball sub-regional was moved from Greensboro, N.C., to Greenville, S.C.

Greensboro will also host regional women's basketball games in the championship tournament in 2019. The NCAA also said earlier this month that championships already awarded for the 2017-2018 season will remain in the state.

The previous bill restricted local communities from offering anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people, according to the Charlotte Observer, and required people to use bathroom facilities corresponding to the gender listed on their birth certificates. North Carolina was put back in the running after the state rolled back a law that limited protections for LGBT people.
