Serena Williams confirms pregnancy

Serena Williams confirms pregnancy

Speculation about her pregnancy began earlier Wednesday when Williams posted a picture of herself on Snapchat.

Williams sent social media and the tennis world into frenzy on Wednesday when she posted a photo of herself on Snapchat with a caption that read simply "20 weeks" before the 23-time major victor deleted the post.

Serena Williams is expecting a baby this year her spokesperson confirmed, hours after the tennis great hinted at the news in a Snapchat post.

Serena Williams indicated she's pregnant in a post on Snapchat but deleted it within minutes after it went up.

Fans were surprised to learn in December that Williams was engaged to Ohanian, Reddit's co-founder, since they had kept their romance out of the spotlight. Williams hasn't played since winning the Australian Open in late January. In 2016, Williams shared another photo in which she's clad in a vibrant daffodil hue, that time while riding a horse on a tropical vacation she took after losing in the U.S. Open semifinals.

Australians Evonne Goolagong and Margaret Court also won Grand Slam titles after having children.

Serena leaks the news by posting a photo that appears to show her with a baby bump with the caption '20 weeks'. Serena Williams has not played since, citing a knee injury.

Williams' spokeswoman, Kelly Bush Novak, ended any doubts in an email to the Associated Press.

Serena Williams returns a shot during her third-round match against fellow American Nicole Gibbs at the Australian Open in Melbourne on January 21, 2017. And did not drop ONE SET. "Let that sink in", wrote Twitter user @noelleharmony on the social media site.

Other women have left the tour to have children and returned at a high level, though none has done so at Williams' age.

While pregnancy may spell the end of Williams's season, it doesn't mean she won't be back on court.

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 27, won the Indian Wells and Miami titles in March of past year before missing the rest of the season as she awaited the birth of her first child in December.

She remains the only WTA player to win more majors with children in tow than without, picking up the 2010 US Open and 2011 Australian Open for four total career majors.
