Crosby scores twice, Bonino has winner as Pens beat Caps

There is too much failure, too many disappointments.

Sidney Crosby scored twice in a 52-second span of the second period and Nick Bonino added the winning goal in the third as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the host Washington Capitals 3-2 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference second-round playoff series Thursday.

Braden Holtby will be the Capitals' starting goaltender in Game 3 against the Penguins, Coach Barry Trotz said. "He's got to be sharper than he was against Toronto".

Ottawa's netminder had 34 saves on 35 shots in a 2-1 Game One win against the Rangers. At the very least, Holtby will have to perform like the reigning Vezina Trophy victor.

"When teams want to play an aggressive game against us, there's risk-reward", Sullivan said.

"We just had to change the mojo".

WASHINGTON (AP) - With Sidney Crosby continuing his brilliance for the Penguins and Braden Holtby not having the same response in net for the Capitals, the second-round series between the NHL's top teams has tilted in Pittsburgh's favor.

On a Sunday conference call with reporters, though, Trotz indicated that switching to Philipp Grubauer for Monday's pivotal game in Pittsburgh was never a serious consideration. Trotz said. "No question he's our goaltender". The Capitals didn't see him a year ago because Murray didn't cede the net, but the Fleury has been so good there has been no drop-off. "That's where your goalie needs to come up with a save", Holtby said. "That's something we pride ourselves in and we look to do when we're playing road games".

Hornqvist left in the first period Saturday night, while Kuhnhackl and Hainsey both left in the third. He went back to the locker room and did not return.

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (8), of Russian Federation, chases the puck against Pittsburgh Penguins right wing Patric Hornqvist (72), of Sweden, during Game 1 of an NHL hockey Stanley Cup second-round playoff series, Thursday, . Despite being hooked by Oshie, Cullen slid the puck through the five hole for a short-handed goal and a 1-0 Pittsburgh lead.

Did coach Mike Sullivan take a page out of the Lightning's 2016 playbook, or did the Penguins find this counterstrike identity organically? "But what I love about this group of players is that they respond the right way and they've shown and ability to do that time and time again and I think this group finds ways to have success".

Then, with Washington still on the power play, Niskanen was left all alone in the slot and beat Fleury on a one-timer off a pass from Ovechkin. All Penguins: Malkin (13: 3G, 10A), Crosby (11: 4, 7), Kessel (11: 4, 7) and Guentzel (10: 7, 3).

The play started when Crosby blocked a shot and got the puck to Guentzel while down on the ice. "Playoffs come down to a bounce and one shot here or there and Thursday we were on the wrong side of it". The Capitals....haven't seen past the second round. Capitals D Karl Alzner missed his fifth consecutive game with an upper-body injury. The Capitals made one lineup change, inserting RW Paul Carey on the fourth line and scratching RW Brett Connolly.

These two teams know how to score.

At the end of the 2013-14 season, Cullen's next-to-last in Nashville, the Predators missed the playoffs and ended the regular season with a meaningless game in Minnesota, where Cullen grew up.
