Health care bill meets GOP skeptics in Senate

With Issa providing one of the final votes to put the bill over the top, House Republicans on Thursday passed the American Health Care Act - a complex bill to repeal and replace much of the ACA - on a partisan 217-213 vote.

The feeling among GOP senators does not appear to be overly enthusiastic about the healthcare bill. Such a scenario would force the House and Senate to work together to forge a compromise bill.

House Republicans passed a bill this week that could strip away health insurance from millions of Americans.

Cruz said the slim Republican majority in the Senate would make reaching an agreement on healthcare reform a "difficult task", adding that a number of obstacles ranging from the ideological to the geographical could pose a challenge for the AHCA bill.

Of course, it's not obvious that the upper chamber will pass anything resembling the House bill.

And in a speech in Boston on Sunday, former President Barack Obama seemed to encourage GOP lawmakers to oppose their own party on healthcare, as the Associated Press reported.

Though Ryan defended the House plan, he acknowledged that the Senate version is likely to differ significantly.

In his Twitter comment, Trump contended, "ObamaCare premiums and deductibles are way up - it was a lie and it is dead!"

Liberals are betting that Trumpcare will be as devastating at the ballot box for Republicans as Obamacare was for Democrats, but Reince Priebus said he wouldn't count on it.

"The GOP is crafting policy on an issue that directly impacts women without including a single woman in the process". For those with serious medical conditions, the costs are exorbitantly higher.

Say what you will about Obamacare, but the law's goal was to make medical care available to everyone.

"These are the same people that said Donald Trump wasn't going to run and he ran, he wasn't going to win the primary and he won the primary", Mr. Priebus said. (Strong confirmed that fact to reporters last week.) The bill includes an amendment that gives states a way to opt out of key Obamacare regulations, including one that prevents people with preexisting conditions from being charged more for their insurance. While insurers could not deny insurance because of such conditions, they would be allowed to decide how much to charge.

Yet as the 2016 election amply demonstrated, political outcomes can be hard to predict. Republicans argued they would have had a still heavier price to pay if they failed to make good on an endlessly repeated pledge that helped them seize control of the House, the Senate and the White House in the years since the law passed. "What we are doing right now is not working".

"We believe this is going to be a better product", Mr. Priebus said. Pence made many trips up to Capitol Hill for meetings on the bill, while both moderate House Tuesday Group members and conservative Freedom Caucus members brought up their requirements for earning "yes" votes on the bill.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney on Sunday defended President Trump's call for a "good shutdown" of government, saying it's his way of fulfilling a campaign pledge to "drain the swamp" in Washington.
