Health Care repeal passes US House

U.S. Congressman James Comer says he is "proud to stand with President Trump" in supporting the Republican crafted healthcare bill that passed the House on Thursday.

This was the deal being high-fived even as the Republicans who voted against it - this can only mean ones who actually took the time to read it - spoke of the impending peril for Americans with existing and perilous conditions. Chief among them: a guarantee of paying the same amount for coverage regardless of health history.

The CBO's analysis of the original GOP bill concluded that version of the legislation could leave as many as 24 million additional people without health insurance in the next decade while reducing the deficit by $337 billion during the same period. "It would cut Medicaid by $840 billion, and substantially increase premiums on older Americans", said Senator Bernie Sanders.

The House voted 217 to 213 for the repeal legislation, Trump's first major legislative victory of his presidency.

"This is a step away from more government control of our healthcare and our day-to-day lives, and a return to freedom for all Americans", said Republican Representative Luke Messer.

"This is a first step in fixing the issues of the high out-of-pocket costs of health care premiums and the bureaucracy of the ACA, though it is not a ideal bill", Stivers said in a statement regarding the bill. "This is going to come back to bite them".

The potential fallout crystallized nearly immediately.

Fundraising surged nationwide as new recruits stepped up to challenge vulnerable Republicans who backed the plan.

"Health care affects everyone in this country and we need to try to get it right". Kim raised more than US$43,000 [NZ$62,000] online over the last week for a possible run. In that Tea Party wave, 63 House Democrats lost their seats.

That might seem self-evident, as it's exactly what Republicans have been saying the past six years.

Insurers have generally considered conditions treated within three months of the start of coverage to be pre-existing, health care industry consultant Robert Laszewski said. But many Republican governors oppose the cuts.

And, yes, despite the spin, it would allow insurers to charge thousands of dollars a year more to individuals with pre-existing conditions like pregnancy, cancer, asthma, diabetes and many others - not denying coverage, but making it unaffordable. Trump tweeted. "ObamaCare premiums and deductibles are way up - it was a lie and it is dead!"

Republicans have blamed it for driving up healthcare costs. 20 Republicans joined Democrats to vote no on the bill in the House. Members of Congress needed to show their respective constituents that they're moving forward with their campaign promises to ditch Obamacare.

Cannon: It's not like we have one side that wants people to have health care and one side that doesn't want people to have health care.

Outside Washington, the Trump resistance mobilized quickly.

The same goes with Speaker Paul Ryan, who did a good job of holding House Republicans, a splintered group of conservatives and moderates, together. Democratic activists were planning many more demonstrations for next week's congressional recess.
