Together, these efforts address the vast societal and business costs of mental health conditions, which are projected to drain $16 trillion in economic output by 2030. Finally, what outward signs there are of poor mental health often involve an individual withdrawing from their peers, rather than actively seeking them out, occasionally also becoming irritable and/or morose or over-friendly.

Republicans are wise to seek savings for patients, insurance companies, and the government throughout the nation's health system, but cuts to mental health care will prove costly down the road. We need to speak up early and educate people about risky behavior and its connection to mental illness-and do so in a compassionate, judgement-free way.
