Olivia Buckland throws support behind Mental Health Awareness Week

Soon afterwards, we received a heartening letter from Brian Tracey, who is a teacher there, who said that the staff found that the programme has "enabled the children to recognise that mental health is as important as physical health, and provided children with the tools to recognise how they are in terms of their mental health and strategies to enhance it". The seriousness and the costliness of the issue demand year-round attention. That review is under way and is nearly certain to report later in the year that, given the increasing number of young people with mental health issues, CAMHS is under-resourced for the job it was established to carry out.

But mental health issues tend to be less visible, so they are generally lower in the order of political priorities. These numbers are similar across all racial, age and gender demographics and range from anxiety disorders to serious mood disorders. No one should experience poverty as a result of mental ill health. Under the American Health Care Act, which Republicans in the House of Representatives passed last week and sent to the Senate, this would no longer be required. There are many myths about mental health issues that cause the stigma.

It's important to remember that mental health is essential to everyone's overall health. Together, these efforts address the vast societal and business costs of mental health conditions, which are projected to drain $16 trillion in economic output by 2030. Finally, what outward signs there are of poor mental health often involve an individual withdrawing from their peers, rather than actively seeking them out, occasionally also becoming irritable and/or morose or over-friendly.

"Through this game-changing partnership, our two organizations will join One Mind at Work and its existing partners to take action, empower employers to more effectively address workplace mental health, and make a difference in a coordinated way", said Sarah Krevans, President and CEO of Sutter Health. Mental Health Month works not just because it is about what others can do for us, but what we can do for ourselves.

"Children and young people may need help with a wide range of issues at different points in their lives".

Republicans are wise to seek savings for patients, insurance companies, and the government throughout the nation's health system, but cuts to mental health care will prove costly down the road. We need to speak up early and educate people about risky behavior and its connection to mental illness-and do so in a compassionate, judgement-free way.
