Microsoft Windows Story Remix headlines Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

The user interface in Windows 10 File Explorer will also be updated so you can better see which files are available on the device and in the cloud, thanks to the use of a small cloud icon in a column labeled "Status".

At Microsoft's Build 2017 event today, the company introduced a new feature for the company's cloud storage service OneDrive that will allow you to access your files without using up device storage.

The big new application in the Fall Creators Update is Story Remix, a sort of Windows Movie Maker on steroids. Several new features will be introduced with this update. With a visual timeline that displays what you were doing when, you can easily hop back into files, apps and sites as if you never left.

If you pop over to your phone, Microsoft's smart assistant Cortana will ask if you want to pick up where you left off. As with other Windows 10 updates, this will be free for existing Windows 10 users.

Microsoft just announced Story Remix-a new app that lets you create videos with mixed reality content, among other things-this morning at its Build developer conference. You can install this SDK and still also continue to submit your apps that target Windows 10 Creators build or earlier to the store.

Windows has a great app for creating videos again. This is Microsoft's new design language, meant to deliver an "intuitive, harmonious, responsive and inclusive cross-device experiences and interactions". Story Remix takes your media - photos and video from your smartphone, for example - and turns them into "instant video stories".

In addition, SAP will be bringing their Digital Boardroom app to the Windows Store as a progressive web app. It is a next-generation board portal that leverages data from lines of business applications to provide a single source of truth for executives to steer the business in real time. This is the latest refinement to Microsoft's UI style that started as "Metro" in the Windows Phone 7 era. When you try to open a file that isn't stored on your PC, Windows will download it and open it for you.

Along with a name, we also got our first official look at the new design language that is set to roll out with the Fall Creators Update.

We were also told that HP ($329) and Acer ($299) will both open up pre-orders for their Mixed Reality HMDs through the Microsoft Store for developers in the USA and Canada. Coming to the public later this year, Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is codenamed "Redstone 3", and Insiders have received a handful of preview build already. The Windows Mixed Reality motion controllers will allow responsive tracking of movement using sensors in a Windows Mixed Reality headset.
