Sensex ends at new high of 30251, Nifty closes at 9422

At 3.15 pm, the 30-share BSE index Sensex was up 16.53 points or 0.05 per cent at 30,264.70 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was up 16.1 points or 0.17 per cent at 9,423.40.

The Sensitive Index (Sensex) of the BSE, which had closed at 30,248.17 points on Wednesday, opened higher at 30,309.71 points.

On similar lines, the NSE Nifty, after hitting an all- time high of 9,414.75, settled higher by 90.45 points, or 0.97 per cent at 9,407.30.

In what started as a massive market rally, Sensex and Nifty saw lifetime highs in trade today only to reverse gains to trade flat as the market inched towards the closing bell.

The BSE Sensex rose more than 1 percent on Thursday to its highest close in a month as stocks of blue chip companies such as. ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, SBI, and HDFC Bank rose by up to 1.59 per cent.

Broader markets looked good as they ended positive.

Brokers said that continued buying by foreign funds as well as retail investors after forecast of a normal monsoon this year lifted the key indices to new highs.

The gauge had gained 74.45 points in the previous two sessions.

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist of Geojit Financial Services, said: "Earlier in the day, French electoral outcome's positivity was dented by weak Chinese data, but oil's rise and Saudi and Russia's readiness to extend production cuts could keep USA equities northbound". NTPC, Tata Motors, Hero Motocorp, HDFC and Infosys are down marginally.

The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 4,031.10 crore, higher than Rs 3,625.49 crore registered during the previous trading session.

Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 0.2 percent while South Korea's benchmark Kospi index was up 0.55 percent on Thursday. State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda climbed 0.8 per cent and 1 per cent, respectively.

In contrast, China's Shanghai Composite index was quoting in red, down by 0.48 per cent.

On the other hand, the S&P BSE FMCG index fell by 60.05 points, the capital goods index edged down by 45.13 points, and the oil and gas index was down by 30.69 points.
