Google's Project Treble Might Actually Fix Slow Android Updates

Google's Project Treble Might Actually Fix Slow Android Updates

That's the dream, really - for those that wish to get Android updates. However, what it does mean for the end user is faster software updates, as the idea behind Project Treble is to make it less time-consuming and less costly for device manufacturers to update their smartphones and tablets to a new version of Android when the software is finally released by Google. By specifically separating out the "vendor implementation" portion of Android, which is the lower-level software that is controlled by silicon makers, the guys who make the processors and chipsets for devices.

The company has been working towards this day for a long time, from splitting the carrier and vendor updates into separate partitions in Android M to making it easier for manufacturers and carriers to roll out specific, core OS updates with Android N.

Like the CTS, or Compatibility Test Suite, the VTS will ensure that all the chips inside the phone, from the SoC to the baseband to the tiny little sensors that let our phones do incredible things, work properly when Google releases a new version of Android.

Google is calling this a "modular base for Android", and says it is the biggest change to the low-level system architecture of the operating system to date. The VTS will ensure forward-compatibility of the VI. While Google's also talking about device manufacturers using the Vendor Interface to handle their customisations, they haven't gone into much detail in today's post about it. Rather, it will be "coming to all new devices launched with Android O and beyond". In a nutshell, it aims to significantly lessen the burden on third-party phone manufacturers so they can deliver updates in a timely fashion.

More news: MP Board Class 10, 12 exams result tomorrow

With Project Treble, the new Android update can (supposedly) be dropped right on top of the existing vendor implementation, potentially cutting SoC vendors like Qualcomm out of the update process.

For now, we just have limited information.

Google will publish full Project Treble documentation with the launch of O later this summer.
