He said the find is still in a preliminary stage, and more mummies are expected to be discovered in the area.

The artefacts date back to the Greco-Roman era stretching from 332 BC to 395 AD that started with Alexander the Great's conquest of Egypt.

Archaeologists from Cairo University, working in excavations, believe that the discovered tomb can be 17, and at least 32 of the mummy, in which embalmed including the remains of women, children and infants.

The tourism sector, a crucial source of hard currency, has struggled to regain ground amid a growing number of militant attacks, including two Islamic State church bombings last month.

"The discovery is still at its beginning", Khaled al-Enany, the antiquities minister, told reporters on Saturday.

Egyptian authorities hope that new discoveries will improve the tourism image of the country and revive interest among travelers to avoid visiting Egypt after the 2011 uprising. Figures from 2016 are not yet available.
