Elon Musk Has Solve for Los Angeles Traffic, Too

Elon Musk Has Solve for Los Angeles Traffic, Too

Elon Musk's Boring Company is officially making some headway. It's not boring at all.

They took delivery of their first boring machine last month and Musk now unveils new pictures of the entry hole, staging area for the machine, and the start of his network of tunnels under Los Angeles.

Vehicles will be transported through the tunnels on platforms, called skates or sleds, powered by electricity at speeds of up to 200 kmh (125 mph).

Since he was dropping video on us, Musk posted on Instagram before tweeting out the links. The scenario is depicted in an animation video posted on The Boring Company's website.

Musk wrote: "The race between Gary, our pet snail who lives in a pineapple, and Godot, our tunnel boring machine, begins soon!"

The idea for The Boring Company was first floated on Twitter, and many wondered whether it had been a joke. Musk added that it's going through final assembly and it will be "a few hundred feet long when complete". A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Department of Public Works told Wired in January that City Council still needed to discuss it further before he could proceed, to say nothing of all the engineering challenges and other opposition the project will surely face. Eventually, he envisions a deep, multilayered network of underground tunnels spanning the city. Musk allayed those fears by responding in the affirmative when asked if the tunnels will be "earthquake-proof".

With that, the so-called Boring Company was born, another addition to Musk's ever-growing portfolio of technology ventures.

Recall that in late April, Musk demonstrated the concept of high-speed tunnel.

Musk claimed such a system could transport cars from Westwood, Los Angeles to LAX airport - a distance of 12 miles which usually takes half an hour to drive - in five minutes.
