Emmanuel Macron names Edouard Philippe as French prime minister

Mr Macron was sworn-in as president a week after his victory over the National Front's Marine le Pen, with 66% of the vote in the run-off poll. Macron's direct predecessor Francois Hollande, a self-styled "Normal President", meanwhile came under fire for paying almost 10,000 euros a month to his hairdresser. Some media have dubbed the pair "Merkron" - a reference to the "Merkozy" moniker used for Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy, France's conservative leader from 2007-12.

"He has a very good relationship with Merkel", the source said.

He said he will implement a reform agenda at home "not because Europe requests it, but because France needs it". He also wants common standards for dealing with refugees and migrants through a European asylum agency.

Philippe is the mayor of the Normandy port of Le Havre, a trained lawyer and an author of political thrillers.

Philippe's nomination also expresses Macron's strategy to go beyond the traditional right vs left divide, and to split the centre-right Republicans party - to which Philippe belongs - ahead of next month's legislative elections.

According to Devecchio, Philippe's appointment would allow the right to rethink and readjust their policies in the long term, however, this decision might cost Macron some of his left-wing supporters.

The Greens, who supported a far-left candidate for the presidency, decried "Macron's liberal intentions" in a press release and reaffirmed their plea to the president for the creation of an Environment Ministry in the French government.

Both have also worked briefly in the private sector: Philippe in a law firm and then as a lobbyist for state nuclear group Areva, while Macron was once an investment banker.

Despite her crushing defeat to Macron, Le Pen is counting on her record high voter count — more than 10.6 million — to propel her party into parliament, as well as bidding to take in "electoral orphans" unsatisfied by Macron and feeling betrayed by the mainstream right, Bay said.

That should give a welcome burst of energy to the much-maligned European Union and efforts to fix it, even if Macron and Merkel won't necessarily agree on how.

She held out the possibility of deep reform to the 19-nation eurozone if it is deemed necessary, saying she's prepared to talk about changes to the European Union treaties - a cumbersome and politically risky process.

"We have been designated the leading opposition force in this second round, that shows a re-composition of political life", she said.

"There will be no arm-wrestling", she said.

Germany, which as Europe's strongest economy has borne the brunt of bailouts for weaker eurozone members, is not thrilled by this idea. One of Macron's close aides said on Sunday this was the kind of tough choice that would have to be made in Macron's inner circle now that the battle for the Elysee was won.
