Hackers threaten to leak unreleased Disney movie if not paid 'huge' ransom

Hackers threaten to leak unreleased Disney movie if not paid 'huge' ransom

CEO Bob Igor revealed that hackers claimed to have stolen an upcoming movie and threatened to release it to the public unless the studio pays a ransom.

It comes just weeks after hackers released pirated episodes of the upcoming season of Orange Is The New Black, with a hacker who had been holding them ransom carrying out a threat after Netflix refused to pay.

Deadline.com said the film was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the latest instalment of the franchise starring Johnny Depp.

The company's future theatrical release schedule includes "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" this Friday and "Cars 3" on June 16.

He did not reveal which film had been stolen but said the company would not be giving in to the blackmail attempt, according to The Hollywood Reporter, quoting Iger from a townhall meeting in NY with employees of the Disney-owned ABC television network.

More news: Is this the song about Taylor Swift, Harry?

Iger did not disclose the movie's title, but noted that Disney is refusing to pay the ransom, The Hollywood Reporter added.

TDO claims that the first episode was released after Netflix was "unresponsive" to their demands.

A huge ransom was demanded and to be paid in bitcoin. "Our offer (s) are still on the table - for now".

TV and film studios are increasingly being targeted by hackers, unnerving an industry that is already dealing with rampant piracy problems worldwide.

That group also said it possessed stolen copies of other television shows including Celebrity Apprentice and NCIS: Los Angeles. Oh what fun we're all going to have.
