Tearful F1 fan gets to meet his hero after crash

Tearful F1 fan gets to meet his hero after crash

When everybody's favourite mumbler, Kimi Raikkonen, wrecked out on the first lap of the Spanish Grand Prix Sunday, a young Ferrari fan in the crowd showed more emotion than Raikkonen probably has, total, in his lifetime.

"Sometimes you have a bit of luck, like last year, sometimes you don't as we can see this year", Verstappen said. "I had a good start but still on the straight I got blocked once by Bottas, I had to lift a little bit and go to the left".

Red Bull were relying heavily on upgrades being brought to the RB13, hoping to bridge the sizeable gap between the Tilbrook team and the Mercedes and Ferrari cars.

But the game of inches played at blistering speed turned against him this time.

The Dutchman was on the outside when Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas collided heading into Turn 1, with the Ferrari driver bouncing off the Mercedes and into Verstappen's Red Bull vehicle, eliminating both with suspension damage.

With the trio starting just behind pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton and F1 leader Sebastian Vettel on the grid, they all immediately jousted for position and entered the first turn side-by-side.

But Raikkonen was also of the view that Bottas had triggered the chain reaction.

As Verstappen and Raikkonen came back out onto the track, Felipe Massa had to take evasive action and hit Fernando Alonso. If Valtteri had not touched Kimi, we all would have had enough room to get through that corner. I tried to go around the outside as there was plenty of room there.

It was not all bad news for Red Bull, however.

Bottas was not penalized after an investigation, but Verstappen himself held a similar view of the incident, saying Raikkonen was blameless for the contact that ultimately ended both of their races.

However, at the end of a qualifying session which saw him finish fourth for the third time this year, the Ferrari driver was uncharacteristically self-critical.
