Tehran mayor Qalibaf quits presidential race

Tehran mayor Qalibaf quits presidential race

Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the 55-year-old mayor of Tehran who lost to Rouhani in 2013, withdrew his candidacy on Monday and called on his backers to switch allegiance to Ebrahim Raisi.

Qalibaf, a former Guards commander and police chief, was one of main rivals of president Hassan Rouhani who is seeking a second term. "We should all go and vote for Rouhani, for freedom in thought, logic in dialogue, law in action, securing the rights of citizens and enforcing social and economic justice".

"A fundamental and crucial decision must be taken for the unity of the revolutionary front", he explained.

"To protect this great ideal, I ask all of my supporters across the country to offer all of their support to the success of our dear brother Ebrahim Raisi". He is now facing five rivals, but some could withdraw in favor of more prominent candidates.

His close association with the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would attract the support of conservatives across Iran. The crowd started chanting "Qalibaf, Thank you!" according to videos released on social media.

"I thank and praise all my popular and unpretentious supporters, who have striven toward realization of the revolution's ideals with all they have", he concluded. "He did a revolutionary act".

"The people of Iran will announce in this election that they don't accept those who only knew executions and prison for 38 years", said Rouhani at the Monday rally.

Mustaf Heshmat Zadeh, a volunteer campaigning for the president, said in remarks to #Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that pro-Rouhani activists have been holding intensive face-to-face conversations and dialogue with citizens at the campaigns' booths and public places, encouraging them to partake in the voting.

Rouhani has also described the upcoming election as "decisive", urging people from all walks of life to turn out to cast their ballots for the future of the country.

Rouhani's allies say his rivals oppose deeper change and exposure to global competition in part because of the economic interests of the Guards, which gained control of swathes of Iran's industry during its years of isolation.

Ghasseminejad believes that while Rouhani is a weak candidate, Raisi may be even weaker. "It's the Tehran vote that Rouhani has got to get out and Raisi running will help him do that".

"The day I made a decision to enter the election despite my personal interests, I was aware that I would face hard and risky conditions", Qalibaf said in the statement on Monday.

Both presidential hopefuls jumped on the Islamic Republic's unemployment rate, which rose to 12.4 percent last year, up 1.4 percent from the previous year.

Specifically, he pushed for tripling monthly cash handouts, ensuring a basic monthly salary for the registered unemployed and create five million jobs.
