Cassia voters vote out incumbent school board members

Cassia voters vote out incumbent school board members

GOSHENJust a few months after voters approved a major expansion at Goshen Central School, they'll be returning to the polls Tuesday to decide the district's proposed $69.7 million budget.

Sagaponack voters unanimously passed the school's $1.7 million budget proposal, with 19 votes for and none against.

Catania has said the district plans to pair the incurring of that new debt with shedding its current debt service from capital projects in 2000 and 2007 - approximately $1.05 million per year.

Christine Schlosman, chief financial officer for the district, recommended the 0.4-mill increase to balance a $2.6 million shortfall in the proposed budget due to increased expenses. Voters also approved the purchase of school buses, including two 66-passenger buses, at an estimated maximum cost of $120,000, with 81 voting in favor and 18 voting against. Heather Welch received 694 votes; Alan Barone drew 67.

The budget in the Hendrick Hudson School District also was approved easily, 567-210.

In the highly contested race for the Williamsville Central School Board - where seven candidates were vying for election - the winners are Kurt Venator, Susan McClary and Philip Meyer, respectively garnering 2,025, 1,887, and 1,873 votes.

Four candidates are seeking three seats on the Board of Education with the top three vote-getters each securing a three-year term.

Voters also approved a proposition authorizing the expenditure of $400,000 from the 2015 renovations and upgrades capital reserve fund for a new gym ceiling. The county's hearings on the budget and tax rates were postponed in April when officials failed to post legal notice of the hearings in the county office building.

It would also be the district's seventh tax increase in the last eight years.

In addition to the budget, Bill Casey and Naomi Hoffman were elected to the school board. The new price will be $2.80, which amounts to a $9 per student yearly increase. Mary A. Eames and Claudia L. Quintana announced after a school board meeting last week that they, too, would like to take seats at the table.

The budget for next year includes $1.27 million for Equity and Access, a new initiative to help teachers reach at-risk students and remove barriers to learning caused by childhood trauma, family disruption and poverty. The plan will come with a 1.25 percent tax levy increase.

If a second vote is held on the budget, it would be on June 20th.

The total proposed taxes to be collected by the school district will be $204,441,642, or 78.75 percent of the budget. Voters also approved the establishment and initial funding of a capital improvements reserve fund, with 388 voting in favor and 134 voting against.

A proposition to purchase three school buses passed 403-103. Also when looking at vacation days during the second semester next year, students will get back the President's Day holiday on February 19, as well as an additional day over Easter (March 29-April 2) for a total of five days off for the holiday. The property tax levy isn't being increased at all.

The second phase of a long-term plan to renovate and upgrade district schools will turn the attention to elementary schools.
