Fentanyl Crisis: Ohio Cop Accidentally Overdoses During Drug Call

Fentanyl Crisis: Ohio Cop Accidentally Overdoses During Drug Call

Police believe the powder was Fentanyl, which is a very powerful drug that can get into the body just by touching it.

Captain Wright, of the East Liverpool police department in OH, said that officers will no longer test suspected drugs in the field, for fear of accidental exposure.

The police report says that after officers blocked a blue Monte Carlo, Justin Buckle, 25, and his passenger, Cortez Collins, 24, attempted to dispose of the evidence.

However, once the patrolman had made it back to the police station, another officer told Green that he still had some of the white powder on his shirt.

When they returned to the station, an officer noticed that Green had white powder on his shirt.

An East Liverpool (Ohio) patrolman was almost killed just a few days ago when his skin came in contact with fentanyl, a deadly narcotic stronger than heroin. He ended up in the hospital but is OK after multiple doses of the overdose-reversal drug Narcan.

Green is said to be doing well. Police also said Collins was wanted in Cleveland for alleged possession of carfentanil and aggravated robbery.

"I started talking weird".

Green was treated and released Friday, and when contacted Saturday said he was still feeling the effects of the substance.

Paramedics were already at the station tending to Justin Buckle, 25, the driver of the auto, and diverted their attention to Green.

Last year, the Drug Enforcement Administration released a video a warning law enforcement that even incidental contact with the drug could result in a fatal overdose. I could hear them talking, but I couldn't respond, " Green told the Journal.

Officer Green used the correct precautions while searching the vehicle. "By then, my thumb, my finger is already in it", Green said.

He says they also have Narcan close by at all times, because you never know when you'll need it.

"Gray death" is a particularly risky mixture of heroin, fentanyl, carfentanyl and other synthetic opioids, and it has likely made its way to Michiana.

Both Collins and Buckle were charged with tampering with evidence, but authorities expected more charges would be filed, WFMJ reports.

He said the department no longer field-tests drugs for fear they might inhale a deadly substance. He wants to continue to catch drug suspects like he did Friday.

Wright added that the incident is an example of how the drug epidemic has forced officers to change aspects of their jobs.
