North Korea: New long-range missile can carry heavy nuke

North Korea: New long-range missile can carry heavy nuke

According to the report, the missile was a new type of long-range ballistic missile.

However, Japanese officials said the missile flew for about 30 minutes, travelling about 800 km (500 miles) and reaching an altitude of 2,000 km (1,240 miles) - a flight pattern that could indicate a new type of missile.

U.S. president Donald Trump has called for far stronger sanctions on North Korea after the country test-fired a ballistic missile. "The Secretary-General calls on the DPRK to ensure full compliance with its worldwide obligations and return to the path of denuclearization".

The North says it needs atomic weapons to defend itself against the threat of invasion and has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of a year ago.

The U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, said on ABC television that the United States has been working well with China, Pyongyang's closest ally, and raised the possibility of new sanctions against North Korea, including on oil imports.

South Korea, Japan and the USA swiftly condemned the launch, which jeopardises new South Korean leader Moon Jae-in's willingness for dialogue with the rival North.

Officials said the missile also reached an altitude of more than 2,000 km, higher than an intermediate-range missile North Korea successfully tested last February.

North Korea boasted on Monday that its new rocket could carry a "large-size heavy nuclear warhead" over long distances, with analysts estimating that it could reach United States military forces on the island of Guam.

The U.S. Pacific Command said Sunday's test flight "is not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile".

"The President can not imagine that Russian Federation is pleased", the White House added.

The United Nations Security Council on Monday condemned North Korea for its latest ballistic missile test, warning that it will implement further sanctions over its provocative acts.

It was not clear what type of ballistic missile was sacked.

"The president expressed deep regret over the fact that this reckless provocation. occurred just days after a new government was launched in South Korea", senior presidential secretary Yoon Young-chan said.

"It appears to have not only demonstrated an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) that might enable them to reliably strike the US base at Guam, but more importantly, may represent a substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)".

State media paraphrased Kim as saying that "the most flawless weapon systems in the world will never become the eternal exclusive property of the U.S., ... strongly warning the USA should not ... disregard or misjudge the reality that its mainland and Pacific operation region are in [North Korea's] sighting range for strike".

But, he added: "We must stop intimidating North Korea and find a peaceful solution to this problem". The US has warned that it may resort to military action to end North Korea's nuclear program, and North Korea has responded with threats of its own.

The launch came as troops from the U.S., Japan and two European nations gather near Guam for drills that are partly a message to North Korea.

The USS Carl Vinson, an aircraft supercarrier, is also engaging with South Korean navy ships in waters off the Korean Peninsula, according to Seoul's Defense Ministry.

The launch is also the first since a new liberal president took office in South Korea on Wednesday.
