Tillerson Says Russia Meddled In US Election, No 'Clean Slate' With Moscow

Tillerson Says Russia Meddled In US Election, No 'Clean Slate' With Moscow

Tillerson's comments in a May 14 television interview with NBC follow Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's visit to Washington last week that included a meeting with President Donald Trump.

"I think it's largely viewed that it is not healthy for the world".

The secretary of State during the interview also addressed the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, noting the US isn't trying to start "with a clean state" with Russia.

Tillerson said the sudden dismissal of Comey, less than four years into a 10-year term, didn't create concerns about how much independence he would have as America's top diplomat.

"We need to see this relationship with a wider perspective, in order to restore it if that is possible", concluded the US Secretary of State.

The Republican senator wrote in a New York Times op-ed earlier this month that Tillerson's warning against "conditioning our foreign policy too heavily on values" told oppressed people the world over that the U.S. would not help them if doing so comes in conflict with moves to benefit USA interests.

However, "it's inconclusive as to what, if any, effect it had", he added.

Tillerson said the United States and Russian Federation have numerous major issues to consider, but said he has no question in his own mind that Russian Federation interfered.

Tillerson said that debate over Comey's firing doesn't affect him and that he understands the line between serving the president and serving the people. "What I am shocked about is you're sitting down with the secretary of state ... and you've got a such a short period of time to ask really serious, important questions".

"But I make a distinction between values and policy". "A policy has to be tailored to the individual situation". Afterward few said any new information emerged about the increasingly tense United States standoff with Pyongyang.

The best way to promote American values, Tillerson maintained, is to achieve U.S.

Asked what the line between service to Trump and service to the country is for him, Tillerson said he "will never compromise my own values".

"The president is being very careful to understand how such a decision would impact the peace process", Tillerson said.
