Google I/O 2017: What to expect from the developer conference

Google I/O 2017: What to expect from the developer conference

At the I/O 2017 conference, Google unleashed free voice calling and support for other media services on its Google Home smart speaker. So Android O will include so-called "wise limits" that will monitor the amount of energy and power that each app is using, and limit an app's access to those resources if it is hogging them. It's at this event a year ago when the company introduced Google Assistant, Google Duo, Google Allo, and Google Home.

On the AR (and AI) front, he teased Google Lens, a set of capabilities for understanding and identifying what the camera is seeing. The new Android version, codenamed Android O, is now available as a beta, and the finished version will probably roll out to devices some time this year.

Google says new tools will encourage sharing of photos that you might have meant to share, but maybe forgot.

Released past year, Google Assistant hasn't really proven itself useful outside of checking the weather, searching Google, or setting an alarm using voice commands. In other words, you'll find out about new features coming to your existing devices as well as future Google tech.

It comes as Google, Apple and Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) are competing to establish the dominant voice-powered digital assistant, which many in the industry believe will supplant keyboards and touch screens as a primary way that users interact with technology.

"The goal of Android Things is to enable Android Developers to quickly build smart devices, and seamlessly scale from prototype to production using a Board Support Package (BSP) provided by Google", Wayne Piekarski, developer advocate for IoT at Google, wrote in a post.

A new version of Android is always high on the charts for I/O, and this year shouldn't be any different.

Google will be holding its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2017 today and the three-day event is scheduled to begin at 10:30 PM IST.

We're also anticipating the announcement of new features for the Google Assistant AI and in turn the Google Home smart speaker.

The event is being held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, California.

You can be sure that the Google Assistant will get decent time at the I/O keynote.

You can point your smartphone's camera at a flower and it will tell you what type of plant it is, or point it at a restaurant to get instant reviews for the place.
