Syrian negotiator calls USA strike 'terrorism' and a 'massacre'

The U.S. military carried out the strike on the militia as they headed towards the al-Tanf military base in southern Syria - near the Syria-Iraq-Jordan border - used by U.S. and U.S. -backed rebel forces.

As long as the US keeps backing anti-regime insurgents in Syria and is willing to attack pro-regime forces as part of that support, there will be a danger that an incident like this could lead to a larger conflict with the Syrian government and its patrons.

"We notified the coalition that we were being attacked by the Syrian army and Iranians in this point and the coalition came and destroyed the advancing convoy", Saloum said.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said the strikes were "completely unacceptable", according to state-run news agency Ria Novosti.

There were no immediate details on any civilian injuries.

The development comes only a few days after U.S. jets killed almost two dozen civilians in an attack on an area in Syria's eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr near the border with Iraq.

Both the USA and Russian Federation, which is allied with the pro-Assad forces, have established buffer zones around their separate areas of operation to avoid collateral damage.

"We are not increasing our role in the Syrian civil war, but we will defend our troops", Mr Mattis said. It was at that point that USA and coalition jets escalated their warnings.

Coalition forces have operated in the al Tanf area for many months training and advising vetted partner forces who are fighting ISIS. The Syrian forces, however, did not budge. The Russians relayed the message to the Syrian government, but the forces did not withdraw, the official said.

"The Syrian army will not be prevented by any force on earth from continuing its duty in fighting anyone that tries to occupy Syria", the SCMM said. "Trump does not have Congressional authorization to attack Syria, a country that has not attacked U.S.".

More than 320,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began following anti-government demonstrations in 2011.

After a convoy of about twenty vehicles including tanks and bulldozers entered the deconfliction zone, U.S aircraft fired warning shots.

Iran has started using the militias they support, including Hezbollah, a Lebanese-based group, to attack the SDF, said Ahmad Majidyar, an analyst at the Middle East Institute.
