AMD Boasts Rising Support For Ryzen Chips: Should It Worry Intel?

"We really believe we're bringing a new class of performance to the eco-system", said AMD CEO Lisa Su in the presentation at Computex today.

The company also publicly demonstrated a Ryzen mobile APU in an ultraportable design, with four cores, eight threads, and the company's Vega architecture-based graphics into a sub-15mm thickness notebook design. The laptop is of interest because ASUS itself said it's the most power laptop on the market, at least by the CPU, being 60% faster than the next offering (which isn't hard to believe considering most laptops are quad-core CPUs). This is an exclusive deal between AMD and Asus and there is little that we know about this partnership at the moment.

AMD officials also showed off the company's upcoming Ryzen-based mobile chip in what looked like a reference convertible laptop. Even better for AMD fans: The company showed off the highly anticipated monster CPU running two of the company's Radeon RX Vega in CrossFire mode.

Finally, AMD announced that its Epyc server CPUs will be available in single- and dual-socket configurations beginning from June 20.

Processing power comes courtesy of AMD's Ryzen lineup, which offers three chips for the new ROG Strix: a Ryzen 7 1700, a Ryzen 5 1600, or a Ryzen 3 1200. AMD displayed the processors, which will debut in the summer of this year, for the first time. Also confirmed was the summer 2017 launch date for Threadripper and the X399 high-end platform, with further details being given. The X399 chipset, not to be confused with Intel's recently announced X299 chipset, will post motherboard availability at launch from ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI. Ryzen Mobile laptops for consumers are expected to launch before the end of 2017, while models for corporate and enterprise customers will come out in the first half of 2018. The demo featured the Ryzen mobile-powered notebook playing HD video content.

It's AMD's turn for press releases here at Computex, and a number of important updates about the future of certain product lines were addressed, the big news being centered around Threadripper and RX Vega.

AMD will launch the Frontier Edition intended for professional usage in the coming weeks.

Su reiterated the same message tonight but attached to it a firm date: AMD Radeon Vega is set to be announced officially during SIGGRAPH, which occurs between July 30th, and August 3rd.
