Trump reportedly thinking about returning two of Russia's alleged spy compounds

Obama also booted 35 diplomats he said were acting as intelligence agents.

But it comes at an awkward time, however, as Congress and the FBI investigate whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation to influence the election in the President's favor.

According to the Washington Post, the Trump Administration told Russian Federation that it is considering to hand over the properties back to them if Moscow lifts its freeze on the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (ERBD), imposed in 2014 in response to USA sanctions in relation to Ukraine.

"In Washington, the USA side said that in the near future it will hand over proposals to us on how to settle the situation", she said, the state-owned TASS newswire reported. One of the steps taken was the closure of two compounds - one in Maryland and one in NY - reportedly used by Russian officials furtherance of their espionage activities. The Obama administration characterized the properties as such when it revoked Russian ownership in late December as part of broader sanctions related to the election meddling.

"This is a real bullying, bullying as it is, because labeling Russian ambassador a spy, who personally recruits U.S. politicians is insane".

In a news conference at the Russian Embassy after his meetings with Tillerson and President Donald Trump, Lavrov said of the compound closures, "Everyone, in particular the Trump administration, is aware that those actions were illegal", the Post reported. The Kremlin imposed the freeze in 2014 after the USA placed wide-ranging sanctions on Russian Federation in retaliation for its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

R.C. Hammond, senior communications adviser for the State Department, told the newspaper in a statement that "The U.S. and Russian Federation have reached no agreements".

A senior USA official who deals with foreign policy told NBC News that the deal could happen because the Trump administration is intent on improving relations with Russian Federation despite investigations into alleged ties with his 2016 campaign.

The media allegations against Kislyak were related to the resignation of then-US National Security Adviser Michael Flynn on February 13 after information about his conversations with Kislyak prior to Trump's inauguration leaked.
