Report of multiple casualties in incident on London Bridge

Report of multiple casualties in incident on London Bridge

About 10.40pm United Kingdom time (9.40am NZ time), reports filtered through of a van leaving the road at London Bridge and hitting pedestrians.

The BBC reports police say there is more than one fatality following the three separate incidents.

London Ambulance Service said multiple resources were attending the area.

A white van was said to be traveling at about 50 miles per hour when it veered off the road and on to the sidewalk on the bridge late Saturday night and struck pedestrians, less than a month after the Manchester Arena was bombed.

"Officers have then responded to reports of stabbings in Borough Market".

According to the BBC, more than one person has died.

The BBC reports that armed officers and paramedics are working at the scene.

Armed officers are also responding to reports of stabbings in nearby Borough Market, and shots have been fired. It was later determined that the Vauxhall incident was a stabbing that was not connected to the other two.

The man, who was deeply shocked and asked not to be named, told the BBC he was at the Market Porter pub when a colleague at another bar said there was a stabbing at the Borough Bistro pub nearby.

Prime Minister Theresa May called it a "terrible incident" and said it is being treated as a "potential act of terrorism".

"We are dealing with an incident on #LondonBridge, when we have more information we will update", Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.

The city's transportation authority, Transport for London, reported the bridge was closed down in both directions.

Several witnesses also reported hearing gunshots.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump had been briefed on the situation by his national security team.

On May 22, a suicide bomber killed 22 people and injured dozens at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

Lara Al-Ostta told The Guardian she was having drinks with a friend in a bar underneath London Bridge when people came running into the pub and telling everyone to run away because "people are stabbing each other".

London Bridge, Bank, Vauxhall and Borough stations were closed, although Bank and Vauxhall have since reopened.

The van hit several people, knocking one person about 20 feet into the air, he said.

An eyewitness told CNN he saw a van drive down the bridge at a high rate of speed, swerving toward pedestrians. Police in the Bay Area are monitoring the developments, and are asking the public that if they see something, to say something and contact police.

Pence also tweeted, "Our thoughts & prayers are w/ the victims, courageous first responders & all the people of London". Jones said the van struck five or six people, and that she witnessed a man later being taken away in handcuffs.

I didn't see the van mount the curb, but I saw everything else. "I want to express my huge gratitude to the police and emergency services who are on the scene", May added.

On March 22, the British Parliament building was attacked by a man who ran over pedestrians with a vehicle and then stabbed several people.
